2017 CLIC CONFERENCE ON STUDY ABROAD:
Understanding the Study Abroad Experience
The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication (CLIC) at Rice University is pleased to invite proposals for the 2017 CLIC Conference on Study Abroad: Understanding the Study Abroad Experience.
LOCATION/ DATES
The conference will take place at Rice University in Houston, TX. The program will include two full days of sessions on Friday and Saturday, February 10 – 11, 2017.
GOALS
The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers and teachers who have conducted research on various aspects of the study abroad experience, with a special focus on students’ interactions outside the classroom.
TOPICS
We welcome proposals from all areas of applied linguistics, including (but not limited to): second language acquisition, conversation analysis, discourse analysis, ethnography, psycholinguistics, language and cognition, assessment, etc.; as well as projects involving qualitative and quantitative approaches; short-term and longitudinal research; pedagogy; etc.
Proposals on the following topics related to study abroad are especially welcome:
- Extracurricular activities for students abroad: volunteering, language partners, home stays, service-learning, etc.
- Student life abroad outside the classroom: social interactions, online interactions, service encounters, use of technology, etc.
- Intercultural competence
- Identity and relationships abroad
- Measuring gains during and after study abroad with a focus on: interactional competence; pragmatics; etc.
SUBMISSION
Proposals should be submitted by email to clic-conferences@rice.edu no later than September 1, 2016. All proposals should include a title and an abstract (max. 500 words) and a list of the references cited if applicable. Please include your name, affiliation, and contact information in the body of the email. Please also indicate whether you would prefer to present a paper or a poster (and please note that you may be asked to present either).
CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF PAPERS
Proposals will be evaluated according to:
- The relevance of the Research questions,
- The data/findings used to ascertain those questions,
- The argument/theoretical proposal to frame the findings, and
- The repercussion the study may have on future  studies on the general topic.
